According to new student visa condition- 8208: No study change related to critical technology without ministerial approval, you are required to have the approval to undertake a critical technology-related study can only be given after the Minister for Home Affairs is satisfied that there is not an unreasonable risk of an unwanted transfer of critical technology by the visa holder.
Note: There are currently no technologies specified as a critical technology for condition 8208 and related purposes. If your visa is subject to condition 8208, you are not required to take any action to comply with this condition at this time. We will update this page when ‘kinds of critical technology’ have been specified for the purpose of condition 8208. When your obligations under condition 8208 begin, this page will include a link for requesting approval to change your course of study.
You must not undertake critical technology-related studies without the approval of the Minister for Home Affairs.
Critical technology related study includes:
- a postgraduate research course that relates to critical technology – leading to either a Masters’s degree (research) or doctoral degree
- a thesis or research topic that relates to critical technology (in a course at Masters’s degree (research) or doctoral degree level)
- a bridging course that is a prerequisite to a postgraduate research course that relates to critical technology.
Approval to undertake a critical technology-related study can only be given after the Minister for Home Affairs is satisfied that there is not an unreasonable risk of an unwanted transfer of critical technology by the visa holder.
Note: This condition does not apply in relation to the intended course of study, or activities related to study in Australia, evidenced in your student visa application.
