Who Need Medical Examination for Australian Onshore Visa Grant

Temporary visa applicants

You and any family members applying for a visa with you might need to have health examinations.

Whether you need them, and what examinations you need, depends on:

  • the visa you are applying for
  • how long do you plan to stay in Australia
  • what you plan to do in Australia
  • the country you apply from
  • any special circumstances that might apply to you
  • whether you have any significant medical conditions

Streamlined requirements for temporary visa applicants in Australia

Temporary visa applicants in Australia will still be required to undertake relevant medical examinations and/or chest x-rays if they:

  • have applied for medical treatment, temporary protection, or a provisional visa
  • expect to incur medical costs or require medical treatment
  • are intending to work as (or study to be) a doctor, dentist, nurse, or paramedic
  • will enter a hospital, aged or disability care facility (if higher tuberculosis risk)
  • are pregnant and intending to have the baby in Australia
  • will work or train at an Australian childcare center
  • are aged over 75 years (if applying for a visitor visa)
  • have had previous household contact with tuberculosis or
  • are requested to do so by the Department.

Other temporary visa applicants in Australia are not required to undertake medical examinations and chest x-rays in order to meet the health requirement.

ImmiAccount information should be updated to reflect the new policy soon. The Department’s service provider, Bupa, has notified visa applicants of appointment cancellations by SMS.

If you have already made a health examination appointment with Bupa and have not yet attended it, your appointment may be canceled and refunded. Do not contact Bupa to cancel your appointment yourself. If you are not advised by SMS from Bupa that your appointment has been canceled, you should attend as normal.

If your circumstances have changed since you completed your form and you think you may need to undertake a medical examination or chest x-ray, notify the Department. You can tell us about any changes through your ImmiAccount. More information is available on Changes in your Situation.

This arrangement applies to applicants for the following visa subclasses, and only if you are already in Australia:

  • 403 – Temporary Work International Relations
  • 405 – Investor Retirement
  • 407 – Training
  • 408 – Temporary Activity
  • 417 and 462 – Working Holiday
  • 461 – New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship
  • 462 – Work and Holiday
  • 476 – Skilled Recognised Graduate
  • 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage
  • 485 – Temporary Graduate
  • 500 – Student
  • 590 – Student Guardian
  • 600 – Visitor
  • 870 – Sponsored Parent (Temporary)

This is a temporary measure and applies to all eligible temporary visa applications currently with the Department and new applications made in Australia. The Government will review these arrangements in early 2023.
